FAQ

  • What is HOTC? We build a home for an economically disadvantaged family living in Plano. We build the home on our church parking lot and move it to a permanent location in Plano.
  • How is the family selected? A rigorous process follows essential criteria developed to make the most appropriate choice of the deserving family. Applications are reviewed, families are interviewed and the Holy Spirit guides us in the ultimate selection.
  • What role does the selected family play?  One or more family members will work on the home most weekends. This gives the family and the volunteers an opportunity to get to know one another.  It also benefits the family - enabling them to learn necessary skills to take care of their new home.
  • Is the family given the home free and clear? No. After moving in, the family holds a mortgage and makes affordable monthly payments.
  • Where is the lot? The Houses on the Corner are on a five-tract lot in Plano's Douglass Community.
  • How is the construction organized? Under the direction of two custom home builders, professional construction foreman and other experienced work leaders participate in each work shift.
  • Do I have to have experience building a house to participate? No, you don't. We will provide you with on-the-job training.
  • What if I want to participate, but don't really want to hammer nails?  Please see our webpage Ways to Help to find out other ways you can assist House on the Corner.
  • What do I need to bring if I'm working on the house?  Yourself, a good attitude and a sense of humor. A sturdy pair of shoes, a hat, sunscreen and work gloves wouldn't hurt, either.
  • Is childcare available? Yes childcare is available while construction is done on the church property.  It must be reserved when you sign up for your shift.
  • When does work on the House begin? Volunteers can begin working on the House on May 3, 2007.  The shift starts at 7:30 am and ends at 1:30.  Starbucks coffee and pastries are available in the morning with lunch, beverages and snacks provided through out the work day.
  • When will the house be completed?  Work on the House will be on site through August 2008, then the House will be moved from the Church parking lot to its final location. Work will continue on the House through September 2008.
  • When does the family receive the keys to the House? There will be a dedication service on a Sunday, in September, during which the family will receive the keys to their home.
  • If I want to help, but don't have a lot of time, can I make a financial contribution to the project?  Yes, you can.  If you would like to write a check to help cover expenses incurred in building the House, please write the check to Christ United Methodist Church and put House on the Corner in the memo line.
  • What if I know someone in a company who can donate building materials? Please contact us at hotc@cumc.com.
  • Where does the money come from to build the House? Does it all come from CUMC members? Is it a budgeted item?  It comes from generous donations from people in the church and the community.  We have also received a grant from the city of Plano for the last two years.
  • Can children work on the house? Age 16 or older can work support or construction.  Ages 12 - 15 may work support with a parent working on site.  Ages 7 - 11 may support only i f their parent is working support with them.  Ages 6 and under should be in the free childcare provided.
